He's gone, Clara. He's gone. The words rang through Clara's head as she stood right outside the operating room, but none of it felt real. Not until she looked in through the window and saw her best friend lying there on the table, lifeless. Alec was dead. Her best friend had left her. Knees buckling underneath her and her crutch falling to the floor, Clara clutched at the wall for something to keep her from hitting the floor. Someone caught her, but she couldn't see who. Because within a moment she was running. Running down the halls and through doors as fast as she could on her crutches. Fast enough she had no idea where she was actually going. But if she kept running, maybe she'd wake up and realize that it was all just a dream. And after running for long enough that she could hardly even breath anymore, she collapsed in the middle of the grass behind the building and broke down. Tears poured down her face as she hugged herself tightly. How could this be happening? How could anyone let this happen to him? First she lost Emmett, the kindest person she had ever known, and now Alec, the best friend she had ever had. Neither of them deserved to be dead. But Clara got to live. By some miracle, she was going to be the one who ended up alive. It shouldn't have been her. She should have died. And that's what hurt her worst of all.

Tristan was in the middle of a mri when Alec had died. It was a hour after he was going back to his room that he saw nurses taking out stuff. It was Alec's stuff. He asked the nurse and they said Alec had died. Tristan was quick to go find Clara.
He was asking everyone he knew until he made it outside after looking all over for her. He saw Clara crying and he wrapped his arms around her. "I am so sorry," Tristan said.

Clara had been crying for longer than she was aware of, and she just wanted it all to end. The world needed to stop because without Alec there was no reason for it to keep going. Normally she might have nearly jumped out of her skin when someone wrapped their arms around her, but right now she was numb enough that she hardly felt him there. "He's gone, Tristan," she said so quiet is was almost a whisper. "He's really gone."
Clara forced herself to stop crying, but mostly because she had just run out of tears. "I don't understand," she said. "Why did it have to be him? He never did anything that deserved that? Meanwhile there are people out there who commit crimes and do horrible things, but they get to roam free. It's just not fair." Clara sounded like a child, but it was because she was in too much pain to bear. It was a miracle she was even speaking in the first place.

Tristan felt bad for Clara. He just held her tightly. "The world sucks sometimes," Tristan said quietly. He didn't know what to say. He wasn't very good at helping people. He just wanted to make this all better for Clara but he didn't think that was possible.
