Leah just got off the phone after having a heated argument with her mom. Her phone was on the ground. It probably cracked because threw it at the ground so hard. Her mom always had to be working but it seemed like she just didn't want to see Alec like this.
Leah knew it was hard but If she could come why couldn't her mom? Leah was out of Alec's room because he was sleeping and she didn't want to wake him. So there Leah was right outside of her room and looking at the light so she wouldn't cry out of frustration. She ran her hands throw her hair nearly pulling on a knot. She just wished she didn't have to act like a parent when she wasn't even a parent.

Ashton was volunteering at the hospital with a group of other med students. Crystal Bay held a special place in his heart since he'd spent an entire year there being treated for cancer when he was fifteen. He was making rounds and checking vitals when he noticed a women throw her phone to the floor. Normally, he would have just kept moving along, but as he got closer he realized that he knew the girl. Leah. They'd known each other in high school. They weren't close by any standards, but Ashton's best friend had always been completely fascinated by her (not that he ever got the courage to tell her about it).
"Leah?" he said. "Leah Kress? Long time no see," he said, smiling slightly.

Leah looked over at the person calling her name. She had spoken to him a few times. They'd been partners in the same classes a lot of the times considering they both loved medical stuff. The only difference was Leah never had the time to actually go to school nor the money even though she had gotten a scholarship. "Oh hey. Ashton right?" Leah asked with a smile. She was never rally good at any names. She saw him a few times around the hospital too. Around the time her dad had been in the hospital he was sometimes in the visiting room.

Ashton nodded. "Are you alright?" he asked, gesturing to her phone which was still on the ground. Ashton was going to ask why she was there, but when he glanced at the patient file in his hands, he saw that the patient in the room they were in front of had the same last name as she did. He was her brother, Ashton guessed, since he was too young to be anything else. Maybe a cousin. But it didn't really matter either way.

"I'm fine, " Leah said with a smile. "Just uh just frustrated," Leah said. She picked up her phone. It was cracked. She groaned and put it in her skirt band. "So what're you doing here?" Leah asked.

Ashton raised an eyebrow at her, but he decided it was probably better not to ask. "Oh, I'm volunteering," he said. "A bunch of the students from the college come here a couple times a week for volunteer hours. It helps us get a foot in the door for when we need an internship, you know?" Ashton knew that Leah was into the medical practice, but he didn't know if that's what she was studying now or if she was even in college.

"Oh yeah," Leah said with a smile. "I was gonna do that but just kind of got caught up on life and such, " Leah said with a shrug as if it were normal to give up dreams so easily. To her it kind of was. Leah didn't have much of a social anything that included school. She just looked over at Ashton.

Ashton nodded. "I understand that," he said. "You should totally get back into it, if you ever get the chance." Ashton hated seeing people give up on their dreams, but he knew that sometimes they had no choice. All Ashton had ever wanted to do was be a doctor, and he was doing everything he could to make that dream come true. He always tried his best to get other people to follow their dreams too.

Leah laughed a little and put some of her hair behind her ear. "...yeah its Probably never gonna be the time." Leah was too busy taking care of her brother and everyone in her family seemed to get cancer. She just liked to focus on everyone else because she found that easier than focusing on herself.

Ashton nodded. "I see," he said. "That's really unfortunate." Ashton felt like he should probably get back to his work, but he liked talking to Leah. He hadn't made too many friends in college because of how busy he was, and the friends he'd made in high school had all gone their own ways by then. "So Alec is your brother?" he asked out of sheer curiosity.

Ashton smiled a little. "I think it's great that you come in here to visit him. You don't see that very often around here. Most relatives would rather not see the kids in such terrible conditions," he said. Sure, it wasn't completely true. A lot of parents came to visit their kids whenever they could, but he was referring more to his own parents. They only visited him once a week, if that, while he was sick. He was happy to see that not everyone's families were like that.

"Well our ad died a couple years ago and our mom she's busy so I figured I'd be the one to see him," Leah said with a shrug. "I'm normally only here twice a week but he just had surgery so I took off," Leah said. It was sad she could take off work but her mother couldn't. Her mom never even tried. Leah scratched the back of her neck awkwardly. "Sorry I kinda talk a lot," Leah said.

Ashton shook his head. "No, it's completely fine," he said. "But I should probably get back to work before someone starts yelling at me." But Ashton really didn't want to be leaving just yet. Leah seemed so nice, and she was actually female and attractive (which wasn't something that Ashton came by very often.) "Umm here," he said, handing Leah a business card with his phone number on it. "Call or text me some time. I'd love to catch up or whatever."

Leah smiled and bit her lip. She took the card. Then suddenly heard her brother puking. "And I think that's my cue to go too," Leah said. Alec just had to wake up as she was having a social life. Yeah that tended to be hoe Alec worked. She smiled at Ashton and then went into Liam's room and tried to help him feel better it was torture to see him like this when Leah knew she couldn't help him at all.
